Dental Tooth Crown
Irvine, CA

Rendering of jaw with dental crownThe aim of our team at Irvine Dentistry is to restore the appearance, function, strength, and shape of any damaged tooth. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ positioned over a tooth. With many years of experience, Dr. Christianne Lee can help you achieve the oral health you want. Our dental crown procedure can make the tooth stronger and improve the way it looks.

Types of Crown Materials Available

Depending on what you need, we offer different crown materials for treating the damaged tooth. A crown can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic, resin, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or metal.

Metal

Metal crowns comprise chromium, nickel, palladium, and gold. Metal crowns are prized for their longevity as they rarely break or chip, and only require a small portion of enamel to be removed. Metal crowns can also better withstand chewing or biting forces. We recommend metal crowns for less visible molars.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal

The porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns boast a more natural tooth color. These types of dental crowns are best suited for back or front teeth since the underlying metal provides good strength. With time, however, the crown’s cap can emerge as a dark borderline. The porcelains ability to become worn down or chip when used against opposing teeth, makes this material less recommended for areas where the biting and chewing activities are hardest.

Resin

All-resin crowns are more affordable than the above-mentioned crown types. However, these are not as sturdy as the other types, may more easily deteriorate, and are more prone to breakage or chipping than porcelain options.

Porcelain and Ceramic

All-porcelain or all-ceramic dental crowns deliver the best color match as compared to other dental crown types. We recommend porcelain dental crowns for people who have metal allergies and for front teeth. They may however not be as strong as metal crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns and may wear down opposing teeth. This is why these types of dental crowns are best suited for front-facing teeth.

Pressed ceramic crowns incorporate a strong inside core and are capped with porcelain. They are an alternative to the metal liner used in the all-porcelain crowns. Thus, they provide the best natural-looking tooth color. One of the benefits is that they are more durable than all-ceramic dental crowns. Dental crowns can fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that is decayed, chipped, or broken.

Why Have Us Crown Your Teeth

We care about our patients and will only recommend things that best suit them. We may recommend you undergo a dental crown procedure for reasons such as to cover a poorly shaped tooth or a discolored tooth and improve your smile. It could also be that you have had a root canal treatment and need something to protect the restored tooth. If you have a tooth that is weakened, worn down, or cracked; or you have a cavity that is too large for a filling, a crown may be just what you need.
