How to Tell If a Child is in Need of Braces

Posted on 3/6/2023 by Dr. Christianne Lee
How to Tell If a Child is in Need of BracesDentists use braces to correct specific dental misalignments in a child. However, there are other reasons a child may require fixed braces.

Presence of Cross or Reverse Bite

Effective mouth closure occurs when the upper teeth close outside the lower teeth. However, a crossbite causes some upper teeth to close on the inside of the lower teeth, driving a wrong asymmetric alignment and incorrect growth of bones which can cause severe complications.

Therefore, braces are attached to the reverse teeth bite, and they exert pressure that causes the teeth to return to their original position.

Excessively Forward Teeth

Excessive forward teeth growth occurs due to the presence of a narrow palate that pushes the teeth forward. In this case, the parent should allow a bracing procedure to decrease the deformity and prevent possible trauma in case the child falls and hits the teeth against the ground.

Harmful Habits

In case the parent notices some harmful habits such as continuous sucking of the thumb finger by the child, they should opt for a dental brace procedure: this is because the sucking can cause a defect in the growth of the maxillary jawbone as well as cause incorrect coming out of teeth.

Open Bite

Occurs when the upper teeth don't make contact with the lower teeth, a condition caused by the defect of the maxillary jawbone. However, wearing braces can help deal with this issue effectively.

Excessive Crowding

Wearing braces can help a child with teeth overcrowding in the lower or upper incisors. With the help of orthodontists, this condition is evaluated to understand the reason behind the eruption of the teeth that causes overcrowding.

Generally, braces are essential to manage and treat most dental abnormalities. The parent must allow the dentists to perform this procedure to prevent further dental complications in the child's life.
